Alan Shearer slams ‘awful’ Calvert-Lewin moment in Aston Villa v Everton live on MOTD
Alan Shearer has slammed Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his “awful” miss as Everton lost 3-2 to Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.
Calvert-Lewin, 27, scored his second goal of the season in the defeat but could have had at least a hat-trick after missing a number of chances.
One of those chances saw him through on goal in a one-on-one against Emi Martinez in the 54th minute. However, instead of shooting, he tried to round the Villa goalkeeper and was dispossessed by Ezri Konsa.
Speaking on Match of the Day (14 September), former Newcastle forward Shearer said: “It was an absolute sitter. Calvert-Lewin times his run to perfection, but he just doesn’t open himself up.
“He doesn’t open himself up, then he gets it stuck under his foot, it’s an awful miss.
“The first one (chance) was the key one for me, if that goes in it’s 3-1 it’s a different story.”
Were Everton unlucky against Aston Villa?
In typical fashion, the Merseyside club blew another lead in the Premier League against Aston Villa, conceding three goals after going ahead 2-0.
Jhon Duran’s wonder strike sealed the deal for the Villa Park faithful, which had travelling Blues fans scratching their heads at what their team has done to deserve such heartbreak.
That said, Everton really weren’t all too bad, and need to keep battling for a Premier League win.
Small positive spells saw striker Calvert-Lewin score and miss some huge chances, as well as hitting the woodwork, and more opportunities will come for the English forward if he keeps persistent.

Defensively the Toffees seem shaky, especially when taking the lead, but once the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite returns to the squad, things might start looking positive.
The Everton boss will no doubt be under further pressure after their trip to the Midlands, though his squad weren’t as bad as the result insinuates.
