Everton may regret Neal Maupay decision after what he did for Marseille
Everton made a fair few changes to their squad throughout the summer transfer window.
Many Toffees fans were happy with the moves that the club made with some wantaways such as Amadou Onana being sold on, while players such as Iliman Ndiaye and Armando Broja arrived.
One of the bigger names to exit Goodison Park over the summer, however, was that of Neal Maupay. He joined Marseille on an initial season’s loan with an obligation to buy.
The striker spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Brentford and looked likely to challenge Dominic Calvert-Lewin for his starting role upon his return to Goodison Park.
This never came to fruition and Dyche chose to sell the Frenchman for £8.4million [The Athletic, 29 August], bringing in Broja to challenge their talisman.
However, after the Merseyside outfit managed to once again throw away a two-goal lead and Calvert-Lewin failed to convert a fair few chances, they may live to regret selling Maupay.
Especially since he managed to score a goal for Marseille in his home debut.
Neal Maupay could have helped change the form of Everton this season
While Maupay was never the most prolific for the Toffees, it feels like he’d have managed to convert most of the chances that Calvert-Lewin missed against Aston Villa.
The striker did manage to bag a goal against the Villans but when you only score one goal from a handful of shots, it starts to raise question marks about the quality of the player.
Maupay was coming off from a solid season with Brentford where he managed to outscore both Beto and Calvert-Lewin.
The fact that the number nine role was a priority for Dyche during the entire window makes you question why Maupay was sold.
Of course, these are all ifs, buts and maybes but it’s interesting to think about how different the Toffees’ league position could be if they had a clinical finisher leading their line.
