Dan Friedkin steps emerge if Everton and Roma qualify for same competitions

Everton and AS Roma would still be able to play in the same European competition under Dan Friedkin’s ownership if UEFA guidelines are followed, according to David Hellier.

It is understood that Friedkin’s takeover could be completed within the next six to eight weeks [The Guardian], with the American businessman unlikely to face any problems from ownership tests from the Premier League or The FA [Liverpool Echo].

The Bloomberg journalist shared that Friedkin would need to show UEFA that independent boards have been created at both clubs if this eventually happens.

Taking to X on Wednesday (25 September), Hellier wrote: “If Everton and Roma both make the Champions League (or both make any European competition the other has qualified for) they would need to show UEFA that they have created independent boards.

“And they might have restrictions imposed on them, re. transfers between the two clubs.”

Everton spared UEFA complications ahead of takeover

Of course, qualifying for European competition is the last thing on fans’ minds at Goodison Park but it is a positive sign to see such ambitions linked with the Toffees.

The Merseyside club last played in the Europa League during the 2017/18 campaign, qualifying several times since the start of the 2000s, but the fans will want to make this a much more consistent thing.

Everton are certainly big enough to compete at the top level but they need heavy investment from someone such as Friedkin, so it is no wonder why European competition is being spoken about already.

If the potential new owner’s history is anything to go by, it is a massively positive sign for the Toffees, having taken Roma to two European finals since 2020.

Dyche and the Toffees must focus on staying in the Premier League for now, but changes are afoot at Goodison Park, and not just the move to Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium at the end of the season.
