Paul Merson shares ‘surprised’ verdict after latest Everton takeover news
Paul Merson admits he was “surprised” that “nobody big” came in to take over Everton sooner.
The Toffees are looking likely to have a new owner in the near future after Dan Friedkin and the Friedkin Group made a U-turn on their takeover decision.
Everton have had a poor season thus far with the club sitting 19th in the Premier League and will no doubt be looking forward to their new owners bringing the club a fresh lease of life.
Speaking on Sky Sports News (24 September, 20:50pm), Merson shared his verdict on Everton and claimed that there could be “happy times” ahead.
“I like Everton – it’s a great club. I’m surprised nobody big has bought it. It’s a traditional club and going into this new stadium, the people buying it won’t believe their luck,” he said.
“They’re going into a brand-new stadium, at a Premier League club. Everton just have to do their half of the bargain now and stay in the Premier League. If they do, there could be happy times ahead.”
Everton need Dan Friedkin to complete his takeover soon
After what has felt like a lifetime, Farhad Moshiri finally looks set to be relieved of his 94.1% of shares in Everton after Friedkin’s miraculous U-turn [Giulia Bould, 23 September].
The Toffees have been through it in terms of the takeover process with many names being linked with buying the club.
However, the takeover isn’t the only story that is emerging from the club at the moment.
Sean Dyche’s future has been put under a magnifying glass since the start of the season, with names such as Gareth Southgate’s being linked with the hot seat [GiveMeSport, 23 September].

The takeover is good news for the club, but fans will be hoping the process is over quickly so they can reinvest during the January transfer window if needed, which, at the moment, is looking fairly likely.
Of course, there’s plenty of time for things to turn around, but once the Friedkin Group come in, it’s hard to see them wanting to keep Dyche around on his current run of form.
