Troy Deeney makes ‘monstrous’ Dwight McNeil admission after Everton win v Crystal Palace

Troy Deeney has been left blown away by Dwight McNeil’s “monstrous” brace for Everton in their win over Crystal Palace.

The English midfielder scored twice in the 2-1 win over the Eagles at Goodison Park on Saturday (28 September) to ensure that Sean Dyche’s side claimed their first Premier League win of the campaign.

Although BBC Sport pundit Deeney insists the Toffees side remain “quite poor”, he believes McNeil’s goals and moments of quality could well steer the Blues away from the relegation zone this season.

Writing in his BBC Sport Team of the Week (1 October) he said: “He scored two monstrous goals against Crystal Palace – monstrous in the season for where Everton are.

“They are going to need his goals. It is a working man’s team – it is quite poor. But little bits of quality show why McNeil is going to be crucial moving forward.”

What happened to Dwight McNeil at Everton and Goodison Park?

As Deeney suggests, this Everton team are far from perfect but they are capable of producing moments of magic on a regular enough basis to remain competitive in the Premier League.

Both of McNeil’s strikes at Goodison Park on Saturday were excellent and the sort of goals you expect the best players in the world to be scoring, rather than a midfielder who has had a quiet start to the season on Merseyside.

Of course, one win won’t define a season and the Toffees need to now build on their three points against Palace. However, it does feel like a weight has now been lifted at Goodison now that the Blues have a win under their belt.

That will matter very little if Dyche’s side don’t claim all three points against Newcastle heading into the international break, but the players will now be full of confidence heading into that clash as well.

Maybe McNeil’s “monstrous” goals will have helped the Toffees finally turn a corner.
