Dan Friedkin transfer prediction at Everton as 3rd points deduction threat looms – Kieran Maguire
Everton could still see their season impacted by the outstanding PSR charge while transfer business is likely to remain restricted in the short-term once Dan Friedkin takes over, says Kieran Maguire.
The University of Liverpool football finance expert told TBR Football on 1 October the threat of a third points deduction remains, after two last season, relating to disputed interpretations of spending on the new stadium project.
Friedkin has agreed to buy the club from Farhad Moshiri and will secure the project financially through to completion [Liverpool Echo, 1 October], but he isn’t expected to have huge leeway in the transfer market once he gets in.
Maguire said: “If and when Dan Friedkin takes over, I suspect there will be two lists, one longer than the other.
“One will be the players that the managers and the director of football would like to purchase in an ideal environment. The other will be a list of players that Everton can actually afford to buy given their position under PSR.
“There is still an outstanding charge against Everton with regards to the way that interest has been borrowed for the Bramley Moore Dock project.
“That is very much relating to a relatively narrow interpretation of accounting rules and the capitalisation of loans, but it could impact Everton this season.”
Sean Dyche overcame two previous Everton points deductions
The Toffees may have ultimately pulled clear of the relegation battle last term with relative ease despite losing a total of eight points for a pair of charges.
But a third would be a quick way to drain away some of the optimism that has been built up by the Friedkin takeover news, the return of Jarrad Branthwaite from injury, and a first win of the season over Crystal Palace (28 September).
Friedkin’s sudden return to secure a takeover agreement from Farhad Moshiri has caused speculation that he believes signings are needed in the January window [Matt Slater, 27 September].
Maguire has already indicated that he expects there to only be a small amount of room to manoeuvre from a PSR perspective in the winter window [Price of Football, 26 September].

The Toffees and their fans would hope that Friedkin’s arrival, largely predicted to come before Christmas if not early 2025 [Giulia Bould, 26 September], would be a cut off from the Farhad Moshiri era and improvements could be made from there.
So a negative holdover from last season’s drama will clearly be unwelcome, although the size of a third points deduction has been predicted to be minimal if that is the outcome [Stefan Borson, 8 April].
It is fairly ridiculous that the Premier League changed their own rules to get PSR breach cases resolved within the season they arise, causing the Toffees to be hit twice in the same campaign, and the second commission still decided they couldn’t decide on the stadium interest issue in time.
But unless Everton have continued making assessments of their own PSR situation based on the disputed interest interpretation it is surely unlikely that there could be any ongoing impact.
Either way, another isolated points penalty could heighten Friedkin’s resolve to strengthen with whatever room for signings there is in the New Year.
