Kevin Thelwell will be kicking himself at Everton after what happened on Wednesday

One area of the Everton squad that has seemed to struggle in recent seasons is that of their striker.

The Toffees have seemed to be cursed when investing in new number nines with players such as Neal Maupay and Beto being just two examples of the Toffees’ rotten luck.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is without doubt the club’s best striker but his inconsistency in front of goal and his recent injury history has left a lot to be desired.

Hence why it came as something of a shock when promising striker, Tom Cannon, was sold to Leicester at the start of last season.

Although the fee was worth around £7.5million, Kevin Thelwell will no doubt be kicking himself after the Stoke loanee managed to bag four goals against John Mousinho’s Portsmouth on 2 October.

Everton should have kept Tom Cannon

As aforementioned, Everton’s focal point has been an area of concern in recent seasons.

While Calvert-Lewin’s unreliability is one of the things that would put most teams off, the fact that both Chelsea and Arsenal were showing an interest in him towards the end of the 2024/25 summer window, shows how much potential he has [Caught Offside, 27 August].

Beto, on the other hand, has been an abysmal signing for the Merseyside outfit and has been of no use to anyone since his arrival last summer.

Armando Broja was also brought in on deadline day on an initial loan deal but he’s been sidelined due to injury and isn’t expected to be back until November.

This could make fans wonder why Cannon was sold because, in reality, he’d have a shot at a first-team spot right now due to Calvert-Lewin’s poor form.

These are all ifs, buts and maybes of course but if Thelwell allowed Cannon to stick around, they could’ve had an answer to their problems without having to splash the cash in January.
