Jamie Carragher loses his mind at ‘absolutely ridiculous’ Everton incident v Newcastle United

Jamie Carragher has slammed James Tarkowski after the Everton defender conceded a first-half penalty against Newcastle United on Saturday (5 October).

The 31-year-old appeared to throw Sandro Tonali to the ground inside the box, and following a VAR review, the Magpies were awarded a penalty at Goodison Park.

While Anthony Gordon eventually stepped up to take the spot-kick, which was smartly saved by Jordan Pickford, Carragher could not quite believe the defender’s decision inside the penalty area.

Speaking live via Sky Sports on Saturday (5 October, 6:01pm), he said: “James Tarkowski, what are you thinking? Absolutely brainless. He’s trying to explain to Pickford, and he’s been over to his manager. It’s just an absolutely ridiculous decision for him to do that.”

James Tarkowski avoids embarrassment in Everton v Newcastle United

Only Tarkowski will know exactly what he was thinking when wresting the Newcastle player down to the ground, especially with the incoming cross going far and wide of the back post.

The Toffees were out of danger despite the visitors’ pressure at Goodison Park, and the centre-back will just be grateful his goalkeeper could bail him out of jail at the final moment.

After grabbing their first league win of the season against Crystal Palace on Saturday 28 September, Dyche will have been hoping for his side to build on the victory and push forward against the Magpies.

Of course, the two opponents are at very different ends of the Premier League table, but there is no reason the Toffees could not claim all three points at home.

With Gordon missing from the penalty spot, Everton now have extra motivation to move on from Tarkowski’s ridiculous decision and push for the win.
