Alan Shearer shares ‘crucial’ Jordan Pickford verdict after Everton draw v Newcastle United

Alan Shearer has been blown away by what “brilliant” Everton keeper Jordan Pickford did in the Toffees’ win over Newcastle United.

Sean Dyche’s side headed into the international break with a 0-0 draw against the Magpies on Saturday (5 October) with Pickford producing an excellent save to deny Anthony Gordon from the penalty spot.

While the Toffees’ attacking performance left a little bit to be desired, Shearer was quick to heap praise on the Blues number one admitting his display was “crucial” to them earning a draw at Goodison Park.

Writing for the Premier League website on Monday (7 October) he said: “Made several brilliant stops, including a crucial penalty save to deny former Everton star Anthony Gordon, and went on to claim his first league clean sheet this season.”

What happened to Everton star Jordan Pickford against Newcastle United?

While Pickford was keen to play down his feelings having pulled off such a big save against Newcastle on Saturday, the England international would have been absolutely delighted to have such a major impact on the game.

The keeper’s rivalry with the Magpies has been well documented having come through Sunderland’s ranks at the Stadium of Light so it will have meant that little bit more to deny Gordon from the penalty spot.

Gordon’s ties with Everton certainly made it sweeter for the fans as well. While some will argue the reaction from within Goodison Park has been over the top, this felt like a major moment in the Toffees’ season.

It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to suggest that Pickford has been the Blues’ most important player over the last few years. His performances between the posts have kept the Toffees in the Premier League and without him, they would have been relegated years ago.

Hopefully, he will maintain his good form after the international break.
