Jeff Stelling reads out Everton points deduction joke live on air after Manchester City news

Jeff Stelling has joked that Everton will receive a points deduction after Manchester City’s legal win over the Premier League.

Speaking on talkSPORT (8 October, 6:29am), Stelling and Ally McCoist received several messages from disgruntled fans after judges made several rulings in favour of City’s sponsorship deals.

Discussing what will happen in the fallout of the four-time defending champions achieving what has been billed as a victory, the Toffees’ own struggles with the Premier League last season were brought up.

Reading out a message which left McCoist in hysterics, Stelling said: “The Premier League have revealed after the Manchester City news today, that Everton will receive a 10-point deduction.”

Everton getting used to long-running Premier League disputes

As City and the Premier League prepare to sift through a whopping 115 charges for financial fair play breaches, no club understand the ramifications of such disputes quite like the Toffees.

Being on the end of the biggest (initial) points deduction in Premier League history last season, before having a further two chalked off in April, created the ultimate “us versus them” mentality on Merseyside.

With the league itself becoming public enemy number one at Goodison, Sean Dyche’s side hit form at exactly the right time, comfortably surviving relegation from the division fans had come to hate.

These attitudes are still being reflected, with the club coming to City’s aide as one of three witnesses to give supporting evidence in their case with Chelsea and Newcastle United [Martyn Ziegler, 7 October].

The Blues will hope that an overall loss for City – with dozens of charges still to be contested – doesn’t lead to ramifications further down the track, with their distrust of the Premier League set to continue for quite some time.

In other Everton news, a former Toffees managing director has slammed the club for a “disgraceful” post on their social media.
