Dominic Calvert-Lewin January exit update emerges at Everton as new club enters race

Everton are “completely against” letting Dominic Calvert-Lewin leave on loan in January, TEAMtalk reports.

According to their website on 24 October the Toffees could be forced into a permanent sale if a suitable bid is made in the winter window and he hasn’t signed a new deal by then.

The update comes after a report from Fotomac in Turkey earlier the same day that Besiktas are interested in the 27-year-old and could do a loan deal midseason.

Calvert-Lewin’s current contract expires in the summer so agreeing a loan move would be of no benefit to them at all, but they haven’t given up on keeping him past that point and have put a “lucrative” extension on the table.

Besiktas interested in signing Everton striker

At his best Calvert-Lewin has proven he can be one of the top strikers in the Premier League so it is little surprise that the Englishman has suitors.

However, it appears to be largely born out of his contract status and the possibility that he could be snapped up for nothing, since even in the summer none of the top flight sides in England put a proper bid on the table to tempt the Toffees.

He is now in his fourth season since he last hit double figures in a campaign, and he has been beset by injury issues at times during that span, although he has largely come through the fitness nightmare under the management on Sean Dyche.

Everton will surely hope that Dan Friedkin’s increasingly imminent takeover will sway the balance back in their favour and the number nine extends his deal.

It is a measure of both Calvert-Lewin’s talent and the uninspired recruitment at Goodison Park in recent years that he has remained the leading striker, certainly since Richarlison went to Tottenham, while understudies have come and gone.

Chelsea’s Armando Broja is the latest to arrive and try to establish himself as a regular alternative, but while Everton have a £30million option in his loan deal he has yet to feature at all thanks to the injury he arrived with, meaning the Toffees have yet to pay a penny towards him [Liverpool Echo, 31 August].

Beto was the headline signing two summers ago but the Portuguese is now struggling to get a look in under Dyche and could be allowed to leave [Graeme Bailey, 16 october], while his teenage compatriot Youssef Chermiti looked like he was on the brink of a breakthrough campaign in the preseason before he was struck down by injury and his return is not imminent.

So as things stand Calvert-Lewin’s importance is as clear as ever, and while Newcastle and Chelsea are also expected to be on his case imminently [GiveMeSport, 15 October] the hope will be that he is tied down to a new deal as soon as possible once Friedkin is in.
