Alan Stubbs mooted as Sean Dyche replacement at Everton, talkSPORT pundit reacts

Rory Jennings has reacted after one Everton supporter backed Alan Stubbs as Sean Dyche’s replacement at Goodison Park.

The Blues boss has come under pressure from fans and pundits alike after a poor start to the season, with most expecting the Friedkin Group to appoint a new manager at the end of Dyche’s contract [Phil McNulty, 4 November].

While a few names have already been mooted to step into the dugout at Bramley Moore Dock, talkSPORT pundit Jennings was taken aback when one fan suggested it should be Stubbs who should take over.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (8 November, 20:43) Tony the Toffees fan said: “Listen, guys, I think we should promote Alan Stubbs.

“He knows the background of Everton football club. He’d set it all up differently.”

Jennings replied: “Is that a risk Tony considering the severity of going down, giving Alan Stubbs his managerial debut?”

Tony replied: “He’s in charge of the Under-21s now mate, he knows the team inside and out. Also, he could get support by bringing Duncan Ferguson in as well.

“Dyche plays his own way, he never changes the format. We’re on very thin ice, Dyche will take Everton down.”

Will Everton sack Sean Dyche amid Goodison Park exit speculation?

Questions will of course have to be asked of Dyche if the Toffees are dragged into the relegation battle once again this season, but it does feel as though he is the club’s best bet of remaining in the Premier League.

During his time at both Burnley and Goodison Park, he has helped teams dodge the drop and that is exactly what is required of him again this year.

It is naive to assume that Stubbs would have any greater chance of keeping the Toffees in the top flight than Dyche would. He isn’t actually in charge of the Under-21s as Tony the Blues fan suggested and has been out of work since leaving St Mirren in 2018.

Ultimately, it seems as though the job is Dyche’s until the end of the season at least, as long as nothing catastrophic happens between now and the end of the campaign.

Maybe then, the Toffees’ new owners could look to make a change in the dugout but Stubbs is unlikely to be the man to step into the fold.
