Jeff Stelling reacts to Everton v Brentford controversy, Ally McCoist agrees
Jeff Stelling and Ally McCoist do not believe Christian Norgaard should have been sent off as Everton drew 0-0 with Brentford on Saturday.
The 30-year-old midfielder clashed with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after lunging for the ball at the back post and was shown red by referee Chris Kavanagh following a VAR review.
Despite the one-man advantage, Sean Dyche’s side were unable to take advantage at Goodison Park, only taking a point following the controversial moment.
Speaking live via talkSPORT on Monday (25 November, 7:27am), Stelling said: “I thought the red card was incredibly harsh. My view is that still frames should not be allowed when going to VAR.”
McCoist added: “Of course they shouldn’t – it’s nonsense. You can argue that even in slow motion, it looks terrible as well. When you slow it down, and you’re right, still frames make it look terrible.”
McCoist ended by saying: “It can be completely misleading.”
Everton fail to capitalise on Christian Norgaard red card v Brentford
It is certainly a difficult decision when a player, who only has eyes for the ball, clashes with the goalkeeper, and so high up his leg.
While still images make challenges look far worse than they are, the Bees’ captain cannot argue too much with the decision as it was extremely dangerous and could have been much worse for Pickford.
Frustratingly for the Toffees, they could not take advantage of the situation and only took one point against 10 men, slowly bumping them up to 15th in the Premier League table.
With an incredibly difficult Christmas period on the horizon for Dyche’s side, playing the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City in consecutive games, it will feel like two points dropped on this occasion.
Water continues to rise around Dyche’s ankles and the goalless draw at Goodison Park will do absolutely nothing to help his case. Time is running out for him to save his job on Merseyside.
