Sean Dyche offers first indication Everton sack could be imminent

Sean Dyche’s comments on Dan Friedkin’s takeover suggest that the new Everton owner’s first action could be to sack him.

Speaking ahead of his side’s must-win Premier League clash with Wolves on Wednesday (4 December), Dyche said he’s still to be given any indication from The Friedkin Group whether he is “their guy or not”.

Friedkin’s takeover is “gathering pace”, Dyche said, with a mid-December completion date expected [Alan Myers, 20 November], and these latest comments imply that he might not be in post for much longer at Goodison Park.

In quotes reported by the Liverpool Echo (3 December), Dyche said: “We’re still waiting on the new ownership – it seems to be gathering pace.

“Who knows what that will bring? We’ll have to wait and see because I’ve had no contact with them.

“I’m sure when they’re nearly ready they’ll reach out to me – whether I’m their guy or not – they’ll reach to get a feel of what I’ve learned.

“I can see why they’ve stepped away until it’s finally done and then I’m sure they’ll be in ASAP and say, ‘right, this is where we’re going with it’.”

Sean Dyche decision pending in Dan Friedkin takeover at Everton

While Friedkin has a whole host of off-field issues to sort once his buyout of Farhad Moshiri is ratified by the Premier League and other governing bodies, he’ll soon turn his attention to the managerial dugout.

A new-look executive team is ready to step in and begin making decisions as soon as they arrive at Goodison Park [iNews, 28 November], with arguably the biggest of these being Dyche’s future.

With a cash injection anticipated ahead of a crucial January transfer window in Everton’s fight for top-flight survival [TEAMtalk, 9 October], it remains to be seen if Dyche will be trusted to spend such funds.

The Toffees custodian is only under contract until the end of the current season – by which time the club will be mobilising their move to Bramley-Moore Dock – but a decision is set to be made well before then.

Friedkin being yet to speak to Dyche – let alone inform him whether he’s “his guy” – could be telling, but for the time being, the onus is on the 53-year-old to turn things around on the pitch as best he can.

In other Everton news, Paul Merson has labelled the Toffees’ clash with Wolves as a must-win prior to an “incredible” run of games.
