David Ornstein shares Friedkin transfer plans at Everton in ‘scary’ verdict
The Friedkin Group are unlikely to spend big on new signings at Everton in the January transfer window, according to David Ornstein.
There have been suggestions that Dan Friedkin will make some funds available for new signings after completing the takeover of the Merseyside-based club [TEAMtalk], but Ornstein reckons PSR constraints are likely to put squad-building plans on hold until the summer.
The Athletic journalist pointed out that the Toffees will have just 12 contracted players at the start of next summer, which he feels is scary, although it offers the Friedkins an opportunity to turn their fortunes around.
“Their revenues, annually, are about $30billion, so we could see investment on the way at Everton”, Ornstein said on NBC Sports (22 December).
“I think we will, not initially in the January transfer window perhaps because they’ve got some PSR concerns that they still need to deal with.
“But, from the summer onwards, a great opportunity.
“They will go into the new stadium with just 12 players under contract as things stand, which is scary, but is also a chance to rebuild that squad.
“They will have plans to really get this moving in the right direction after what has been a terrible, terrible spell in the history of Everton.”
Dan Friedkin has Sean Dyche decision to make at Everton
Ornstein also touched on the fact that Sean Dyche, as well as director of football Kevin Thelwell, is entering the final six months of his contract at Goodison Park.
While Thelwell is regarded highly in the football industry, many believe Dyche will not be in charge of Everton when they move to their new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium at the start of next season [The i].
In short, the Friedkins have no time to rest on their laurels after bringing some sort of financial stability to Finch Farm.
There is no denying that Dyche’s side are still embroiled in a relegation battle as they are placed 15th in the Premier League, sitting just four points above the drop zone, albeit with a game in hand.

Avoiding relegation will be integral to Friedkins’ long-term plans and it is imperative that they provide the manager with enough ammunition to do that.
Therefore, some sort of investment can be expected when the January transfer window opens next week.
