Everton face difficult January transfer window after what Sean Dyche said
Everton fans’ hopes of an active January on the transfer front will have been dampened by what Sean Dyche said about their spending ability.
Speaking after the Toffees’ 2-0 home loss to Nottingham Forest in their final match of 2024, Dyche poured water on the prospect of a spending spree next month despite Dan Friedkin’s takeover.
The Blues’ precarious financial situation has been spared by Friedkin’s arrival in place of Farhad Moshiri on Merseyside, but fans will be disappointed if they don’t make some headline additions in January.
In quotes reported by Liverpool World (30 December), Dyche said: “I don’t know about the January situation. I know you’ll keep asking me but it depends on PSR.
“There is no problem with it but we still have rules like everyone will in this window. The last one was lower, the previous was lower, and this one probably will be lower – we don’t know yet.”
Everton fans still hopeful of statement January signings
While Dyche wasn’t definitive on whether or not the Toffees will be able to spend freely in January, the looming spectre of PSR – which threatened to relegate them last season – will again prove decisive.
That hasn’t stopped Dyche from drawing up a list of areas he’s keen to strengthen next month, namely the right side of midfield and full-back positions, but the policy will likely be sell-to-buy at Goodison.

Friedkin’s to-do list after completing his takeover on 19 December also includes addressing an assortment of player contracts either due to expire at season’s end or approaching crucial periods.
Few Premier League squads need more attention than Dyche’s next month as they teeter just a few points above the relegation places, but their spending capacity is yet to be determined.
The summer of 2025 is set to bring about big changes as the Blues begin their new life at Bramley-Moore Dock, but a positive January window is still required to ensure Premier League status is retained.
