Bournemouth v Everton: Mike Dean reacts to incident on Sky Sports

Mike Dean believes James Tarkowski may have kept Milos Kerkez onside before Bournemouth scored a winner against Everton on Saturday.

The Toffees looked well on their way to securing a well-earned point at the Vitality Stadium on 4 January, only for substitute David Brooks to volley home the Hungarian’s cross with 15 minutes remaining.

With the goal being checked for offside by VAR, Dean predicted the goal to stand and he turned out to be right at Sean Dyche’s team were sent packing back to Merseyside empty-handed.

Speaking live via Sky Sports News [4 January, 4:38pm], the former referee said: “I think he’s just onside. I think Tarkowski’s left knee is probably just playing him onside.

“It’s very close but my gut feeling is that it’s onside.”

Everton handed cruel blow after David Brooks winner

A draw against the Cherries would have given the Toffees an incredible boost at the bottom of the Premier League table, but yet again, they leave with nothing.

There is little that could be done about Brooks’ spectacular winner, cushioning a volley beyond Jordan Pickford, but Dyche’s players need to put themselves in a much better position at the end of games.

The Toffees have still not uncovered a goal-hungry striker, who can prove the difference in such games, even with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Beto and Armando Broja available, albeit the latter going off injured.

Iliman Ndiaye, Jesper Lindstrom and Abdoulaye Doucoure have also failed to bulge the back of the net on a regular basis, leaving Dyche’s team short of important goals.

If the current trend continues for the Merseyside club, relegation looks like a very real prospect come the end of the 2024/25 campaign, and could also mean the end for Dyche at Goodison Park.

Sure, it was an incredible moment that made the difference at the Vitality Stadium but the Toffees barely created anything for themselves away from home – not really a shock.
