Everton big issue raised amid January transfer links

Joe Thomas believes the “big issue” overarching Everton at the moment is whether they can bring any reinforcement in during the January window.

Things haven’t been ideal at Goodison Park this season, with the Merseyside outfit currently sitting 16th in the Premier League and not clear of relegation danger.

But, now that the transfer window is open and players can be brought in, fans have been left wondering whether some new faces will be brought in to improve their chances of survival.

Reporting via the Liverpool Echo’s website (4 January), Thomas shared his verdict on the Toffees’ transfer window plans.

“Whether anything can be done to improve the current squad is the big issue now,” he wrote.

“For all of the progress off the pitch through the takeover and the impending move to a new stadium, and the stability [Sean] Dyche has provided on it, Everton enter the final half of this season just two points clear of the relegation zone and with reasons to look over their shoulder.

“Bringing in players will be tough, however. While Everton believe they have come through the threat of further PSR sanctions they still have to be cautious this month.

“The expectation is that from July 1 and the beginning of the new football accounting year they will finally have more freedom to spend – they just need to get there while still in the top flight.”

Everton need to find money to bring new faces to Goodison Park

Although Everton aren’t yet in the Premier League drop zone, it feels like unless some new faces are brought to Merseyside, things could end up going south for Sean Dyche’s men.

At the moment, they have a two-point gap to the bottom three and while that’s certainly better than nothing, it feels like more need to come from Everton.

Dyche has ensured that his defence is solid and, while they’ve carried their weight, other areas of the squad such as striker and perhaps some of their wingers have been way off the pace this season.

Although no names have been concretely linked with a switch to the Merseyside club, it feels like if Everton want to boost their hopes of survival, another couple of players need to be brought in.

Otherwise, they could be left in the dust by their relegation rivals should they choose to bolster their ranks during the January transfer window.
