Graham Potter appointment: Everton ‘crucial hours’ ahead amid new development
Everton have been told to “move quickly” to appoint Graham Potter after a setback over becoming West Ham’s head coach.
The 49-year-old has been one of the names linked with Sean Dyche’s job at Goodison Park, with the Hammers also interested in replacing Julen Lopetegui after six months of struggles [The Independent].
While Potter looked set to become the new head coach at the London Stadium, the deal has taken a new twist as he would prefer a two-and-a-half-year deal over the proposed six-month deal [The Times].
Reacting to the news via X [7 January], TEAMtalk journalist Harry Whitwell wrote: “Everton have a window of opportunity but must move quickly if they believe Potter is the right man for the job.
“They may have to offer a long-term contract. As reported, TFG are big admirers of Potter. Crucial hours ahead. Let’s see.”
Everton race to appoint Graham Potter as West Ham saga continues
The Friedkin Group may have to take this sign as their time to strike, with Potter’s talks at the London Stadium stalling due to the length of contract being offered to him.
However, this would mean putting their faith in the former Brighton and Chelsea figure, who has been out of work since April 2023 and has a rather distinct style of football.
The main concern about hiring Potter would be if the current squad of players are capable of playing his style of football or whether it would sink them into relegation to the Championship.
That is absolutely the worst-case scenario, with the Toffees set to move into the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Dyche has saved the Blues from the dropzone on one occasion already, being lauded for his job at Goodison Park last term, but it does look like he is about to perform the same miracle this time.
If TFG wait too long to find out if Dyche can complete the near-impossible, finding a new manager might not be enough to save their new club from the dreaded fear of relegation.
