Dyche is the reason Carragher is correct over Potter Everton decision

Jamie Carragher is correct that Graham Potter may be tempted to take a job at West Ham United over Everton given the choice.

Carragher proclaimed live on Sky Sports Monday Night Football (6 January) that with Sean Dyche and Julen Lopetegui potentially finding their respective jobs hanging by a thread, Potter could be faced with a decision that tilts him towards the Hammers, despite his claims the Toffees are a bigger and more historic club.

The Friedkins have demonstrated their ruthlessness with Roma this season, sacking two managers – club icon Daniele de Rossi, and now-Southampton boss Ivan Juric. It appeared they would be content to let Dyche provide the stability through to the end of the season, though a change of heart may be on the cards.

Carragher reasoned that West Ham’s alleged certainty for Premier League survival would appeal more to Potter, whereas Everton could find themselves relegated – but given Dyche’s record, keeping him until the end of the season would make that unimaginable fate highly unlikely.

A key reason Everton could be staring down the barrel of the Championship instead of West Ham, as Carragher notes, is because they might decide to get rid of a man who has achieved safety in each of the past two seasons. The summer could instead be the time to make that change, but the temptation can be sympathised with.

Everton have huge Dyche call to make after Potter reports

Everton supporters have understandably largely come to the end of their tether with the turgid football they often find themselves forced to endure.

Similarly to the end of last season, the Toffees hovered above the relegation zone before steering clear thanks to their defensive acumen under Dyche, at a cost of a limited attacking threat.

The issue the Friedkins however face now is that having finally acquired the reins of the club and looked to put their short-term faith in Dyche, that forward threat has become utterly toothless and an appealing out-of-work coach is seemingly available.

Dyche is a master in achieving what Everton can realistically achieve this season. Next year, within the alluring environment of the Bramley-Moore Dock Stadium, they can dispense with the former Burnley boss and strive for more. But could Potter rock the boat further and make relegation an even larger threat? That is the massive decision they have to make.

If they don’t make it very soon, the Merseysiders could be facing Potter when they host West Ham on 15 March.

In other Everton news, the club could look to twist Aston Villa’s arm over making a proposed loan deal a permanent January switch.
