Simon Jordan drops ‘shocking’ Everton verdict amid Sean Dyche development

Everton have some “shocking” defenders in their ranks, according to Simon Jordan.

Sean Dyche’s future has become a major topic of discussion at Goodison Park this week, with the Toffees holding talks over hiring Graham Potter, who now appears set to take the reins at West Ham [The Times].

Discussing Dyche’s situation on talkSPORT (8 January), Danny Murphy posed the question about how the manager can turn things around for the Merseyside-based club.

“Could he [Dyche] do more in terms of being more creative, a bit more high-risk?”, he asked.

Jordan straight away picked defence as an area that Everton need to work on.

He said: “Defensively, they have got the platform to do that because I think they’ve got some shocking defenders in there.”

Murphy, though, thinks otherwise, saying: “No, defensively they have been great recently.”

Jordan, in turn, replied: “As a unit, yes, they have, but what I’m saying is you become ambitious and more expansive, you put more onus on your defensive players.”

It remains to be seen if Everton will sack Dyche as Rob Dorsett previously claimed that they would only do so if they can convince Potter to join them.

With the former Chelsea boss seemingly on his way to West Ham, The Friedkin Group may choose to stick with the 53-year-old for the time being.

Meanwhile, it is interesting that Jordan picked out defence as a problem area for the Toffees, while many others have identified goalscoring as their major weakness.

It is worth noting that Dyche’s side have scored just five goals in the Premier League since November. They played 10 games during that period, but found the back of the net in only two.

At the same time, Jordan Pickford has seven clean sheets to his name this season. Only Liverpool and Nottingham Forest have had more [Premier League].

Moreover, Jordan did not single out any particular player for criticism, so it is unclear who he thinks are “shocking” in the Everton squad.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are in talks to sign a midfielder likened to Sergio Busquets.
