Graham Potter Everton talks update after West Ham announcement made

Graham Potter’s announcement as the new West Ham United manager was “delayed slightly” after the former Chelsea boss had further discussions with Everton, according to Rob Dorsett.

The 49-year-old was the subject of interest from both Everton and West Ham but it was the Hammers who acquired his services.

Potter is set to be in charge of the London Stadium outfit’s next game against Aston Villa on 10 January the FA Cup.

Writing for Sky Sports’ live blog (9 January), Sky Sports journalist Dorsett shared a fresh update on the Potter situation.

“The negotiations and appointment were delayed slightly as Potter and his representatives held further discussions with Everton, who were also interested in him – but in the end, those negotiations were mutually dropped so that Potter could proceed with West Ham,” he wrote.

Everton missed out on a golden opportunity with Graham Potter

Sean Dyche may well be a Premier League survival specialist but it feels like the Toffees would have been much better off with a manager such as Potter at the helm.

The 2024/25 season has been a struggle for Everton as they’ve failed to have any sort of composure in the final third with their top scorer this season bagging just three goals.

While a lot of their misfortune can be blamed upon the strikers among their ranks such as Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it feels like Potter would have brought a new lease of life to the Toffees’ camp.

Of course, that train has now left the station with the 49-year-old taking over the Hammers hot seat and likely looking to get them to at least the top half of the table.

With Dyche’s contract expiring at the end of the season, it feels likely that The Friedkin Group will bring in a new face to lead their team next term but the fact they’ve missed out on Potter is no doubt a major blow.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have been told that they’ll have to spend big if they want to sign a Championship attacker in January.
