Everton manager news as Ben Jacobs provides Gary O’Neil approach update

Everton haven’t reached out to Gary O’Neil in the search for a Sean Dyche replacement, according to Ben Jacobs.

The journalist reported live on talkSPORT (10 December) that after the 53-year-old’s shock sacking, the former Wolves boss – who was sacked last month – hadn’t been approached by the Friedkin Group after Dyche’s dramatic dismissal..

David Moyes’ name is the one that seems to be cropping up the most regarding the role with the Scotsman reportedly already having terms agreed despite further talks being held on Friday.

“There’s been no outreach to Gary O’Neil and Jose Mourinho as we alluded to yesterday, not a possibility because it didn’t end well at Roma,” respected journalist Jacobs said.

Everton cannot make a move for Gary O’Neil

Although it’s highly unlikely that Everton would try and make a move for O’Neil after what happened with Wolves this season, the fact that it’s even being spoken about should be a cause for concern.

Since Carlo Ancelotti exited Goodison Park, things haven’t gone quite to plan for Everton with the Merseyside outfit consistently finding themselves in a relegation battle.

While Dyche may have worked wonders last season by keeping the Toffees in the top flight after their point deductions, it feels like Everton need to aim higher than what they have done over the last few years.

Of course, there were times when O’Neil’s tactics worked for the better and put Wolves in a decent position but more often than not, his team lacked that fire in the belly that lower-end Premier League teams need to compete.

If the Friedkin Group want to ensure their first season at Bramley-Moore Dock is in the Premier League, things are going to have to turn around as soon as possible otherwise, things could take an even stronger turn for the worse.
