Peterborough chief rages in replies to Young after ‘stupid’ Everton controversy

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has slammed Everton ace Ashley Young for his social media comments after the FA Cup win.

The ex-England international sent a message via X on 10 January, simply saying “gutted” after his son wasn’t brought on at Goodison Park.

The father-son duo had a chance to make FA Cup history by facing each other but Posh manager Darren Ferguson opted against bringing Tyler Young off the bench.

There has been an outburst on social media against the League One side’s head coach but reacting on X (10 January), MacAnthony has slammed the Toffees man and fans’ reactions.

He said: “This nonsense has to stop. My manager was 100 per cent correct in his actions. This wasn’t some friendly or exhibition event.

“Tyler is doing fantastic with our 21’s and progressing phenomenally with a bright future but bringing him on at that time considering the circumstances around the game with us one down with minutes left was not the right thing for the team.

“Putting stupid tweets out asking for him to be sacked is unintelligent and frankly moronic. In time even Ashley will appreciate this as opposed to his current feeling around it. Cheers.”

It is safe to say that the 39-year-old had his heart set on facing his son in the FA Cup for a potentially once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Given that this has never happened in the 154-year history of the competition this has never happened, the clash at Goodison looked set to be one to remember.

Ferguson clearly wasn’t one for making memories as his focus remained on securing a positive result for the Posh against Premier League opposition.

Although this may have been a bitter pill for the Young’s to swallow, the manager can not be blamed for making changes with an attempt to get back on level terms.

It also has to be considered that the 18-year-old is yet to make a senior appearance for the League One side so his absence wouldn’t be a surprise in any other circumstance.

As much as the Toffees man wanted to see this happen, sending out social media seems to be strange given how experienced he is.
