David Moyes frustration aired live on Sky Sports after Everton appointment

Stephen Warnock aired his frustrations surrounding common misconceptions about David Moyes in a public backing of the new Everton boss.

The Blues announced Moyes’ return via their official website on Saturday (11 January) as the 61-year-old signed a two-and-a-half-year deal for a second stint at Goodison Park.

Moyes will speak to the media for the first time at Finch Farm on Monday (13 January). As questions persist regarding his pragmatic approach, ex-Liverpool defender Warnock launched a scathing defence of the Blues boss live on Sky Sports News (13 January, 11:43am).

He said: “I get really frustrated when I hear the narrative around Moyes being a direct manager. You’ve got to score goals to win games, but also play out from the back as well.

“What he does is he gets his side to pick the right moments. You don’t win European trophies and get into the European places in the Premier League without being creative.”

David Moyes can turn the tide at Everton

One of the biggest urgent problems Moyes must address upon his Everton return is the side’s lack of goals.

The Toffees are the second-lowest goalscorers in the Premier League, only ahead of bottom-of-the-table Southampton, with only 15 goals scored in 19 matches.

Moyes will need the goals to come thick and fast early into his tenure, with tough clashes against Aston Villa, Tottenham and Brighton ahead.

Everton were believed to be eager to act fast in the transfer market to reignite a move for former transfer target Ernest Nuamah [Santi Aouna], but Goodison News has learned those reports are wide of the mark.

Regardless, the lack of a regular goalscorer on Merseyside leaves the Toffees lingering one point clear of the relegation zone.

Furthermore, loan duo Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison have proved to be resounding failures, and neither has boasted a single Premier League goal contribution this season.

While Moyes prided himself on defensive resilience during his first spell at Everton, it has been 15 years since he left for Manchester United, and during that time, he won the Europa Conference League with West Ham.

Evertonians should not fear the style of football they will witness under Moyes – instead, their concern should be whether The Friedkin Group is prepared to provide the firepower.
