Sean Dyche deserved more Everton credit despite justified sacking

Phil McNulty says Sean Dyche deserved more credit from The Friedkin Group but understands the Everton decision to sack the manager.

TFG decided to part ways with Dyche just hours ahead of their FA Cup win against Peterborough United on Thursday (9 January).

Since the choice was made, David Moyes has made a return to Goodison Park in the hope that he can guide the Toffees back to success in the Premier League.

Writing for BBC Sport, McNulty said: “The criticism I would have of Everton’s dismissal of Dyche is that I felt he deserved a little bit more credit than a 75-word statement that did not even acknowledge his work in keeping the club in the Premier League over the last two seasons in difficult circumstances, with little money to spend and also in the face of points deductions for breaches of Profit and Sustainability rules.

“I think the criticism of TFG is unfair in that if Sean Dyche felt he had taken Everton as far as he could (or perhaps this particular squad as far as he could) then they could not wait before acting as the current situation is very worrying.

“The timing was certainly unusual, a couple of hours before the FA Cup tie against Peterborough United, but we must assume negotiations over severance terms were taking place.”

David Moyes replaces Sean Dyche at Everton

While Dyche had a difficult time in Merseyside, impacted by off-the-pitch circumstances, there is no doubt that he had not got them to where they should be and sitting just one point above the relegation zone is worrying.

Furthermore, if the 53-year-old felt he couldn’t progress any further with this Blues side then it would leave them in a worrying position in the second half of the season, knowing that relegation would be disastrous for their future.

However, as McNulty says, the boss probably did deserve a bit of a warmer send-off than he received, as thanks for all the good work he did during his time with the Toffees.

Nevertheless, Moyes has returned to the club and generally, seems to be a popular replacement for the former manager. Therefore, TFG will be hoping they can end the season on a brighter note and look towards their new era in a new stadium next term.
