Steve Bruce left with transfer wish as Everton change to David Moyes

Harry Tyrer’s displays on loan at Blackpool make it no surprise that Steve Bruce is hoping he won’t be recalled by Everton.

Following a shaky start to his loan spell in which he was in and out of the team, Tyrer is now hitting his straps and has been Blackpool’s number one of late, keeping seven clean sheets in 20 appearances.

David Moyes’ return to Goodison Park in place of Sean Dyche could see a change of strategy in terms of loanees before 3 February, but it’s clear to see that Bruce wants to keep Tyrer at all costs.

Speaking to the Blackpool Gazette (13 January), Bruce said: “I would imagine he is going to stay with us. There’s been a change at Everton, but we hope nothing changes in this respect.

“The kid needs games in my opinion, and the more he plays, the better he’ll become. He’s done far better than most would’ve thought, and he seems better within himself.

“He looks a far better keeper now than he did four months ago – I’ve been pleased with young Harry lately.

“When he came through the door, he hadn’t played a league game. You can see him getting confident with every game he plays.”

Harry Tyrer finding his feet away from Everton this season

At 23 years of age, Tyrer wouldn’t be considered a “young” player if he plied his trade outfield, but goalkeepers face completely different scenarios to most when it comes to getting game-time.

As Bruce points out, Tyrer hadn’t featured in either the Premier League or EFL before this season, with previous loan spells taking him to Chester and Chesterfield in the sixth and fifth tiers respectively.

Keeping seven clean sheets across 20 appearances in his first spell at a club in England’s top four divisions is no mean feat, and it’s clear that Tyrer is slowly working his way up the Toffees’ pecking order.

Jordan Pickford remains the undisputed number one at Goodison Park and has salvaged several points for the Blues already this term, but a spot as his deputy going forward could soon open up for Tyrer.

Number two Joao Virginia and veteran Asmir Begovic are both out of contract this summer, and if Moyes is as impressed as Bruce has been, Tyrer could find himself on the bench at Bramley-Moore Dock next season.

In other Everton news, incomings and outgoings are expected as Moyes and the Friedkin Group tackle the transfer window.
