Everton ‘given green light’ to sign Devyne Rensch as Ajax chief speaks out

Everton have received encouragement to pursue a move for Devyne Rensch after Ajax director Alex Kroes admitted the player could leave the Dutch giants.

The Blues emerged as serious contenders for the defender alongside European outfits Napoli and Marseille after Roma saw a £4.2million offer rejected on Monday (13 January) [Algemeen Dagblad].

Ajax are believed to be demanding double the initial offer to sanction a mid-season sale, but David Moyes’s side have essentially received the green light to pursue a deal after Kroes revealed to Ziggo Sport (14 January) he is open to a sale in the winter transfer window if the right offer is tabled.

He said: “If you have already played against RKC a few times, such as last weekend, then at some point you also think: ‘I want to play against Juventus, Barcelona or Real Madrid’”, as translated by Everton News [14 January].

“We have tried to extend his contract and so far have not been successful. In the short term we want to keep him to qualify for the Champions League. But at the same time, you also have the chance that you can get a nice amount for him.”

Everton should go all out for Devyne Rensch

While one of the major problems facing Moyes upon his Everton return is the lack of goals in the side, the Merseyside outfit cannot be ignorant to exciting market opportunities with quality lacking across the pitch.

The Toffees have been alerted to Rensch’s availability as he nears the end of his contract in Amsterdam, and the reported £8.2m valuation for a player of his talent represents excellent value.

With the exception of Jarrad Branthwaite, none of the current defensive crop at Goodison Park can be considered on the cusp of developing into an elite-level talent.

Furthermore, it is an ageing Everton backline with regular starters James Tarkowski, Ashley Young and club captain Seamus Coleman all on the wrong side of 30.

The 21-year-old can play anywhere along the defence, has extensive Champions League experience for his age and would bring a new lease of life to a backline collectively coming to the end of their careers.

However, the Blues are in no position to offer European football next season, and unless a dramatic turnaround occurs, it could become a major sticking point in negotiations.

His career has since stalled since ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag predicted Rensch would have an “amazing” career in the sport [Goal, 6 April 2021], but there is plenty of time for his prediction to ring true and it could happen at Goodison Park.
