Sutton hits back at Moyes claim at Everton after what Rory Smith said

Everton have brought in an “adaptable” manager in David Moyes, according to Chris Sutton.

Discussing Moyes’ return to Goodison Park on BBC Radio 5’s Monday Night Club (13 January), Rory Smith said someone like Graham Potter would have built something new with the Toffees, unlike Moyes.

Sutton, who recently expressed his sympathy for Sean Dyche, instantly hit back at Smith and later took to social media to rebuff the stereotype that the Scot is a one-dimensional manager is “plainly wrong”.

“David Moyes has proven throughout his managerial career that he is adaptable and to stereotype him as one-dimensional and infer because of age he can’t build something is plainly wrong”, Sutton wrote on X (13 January).

David Moyes what Everton need right now

Moyes’ brand of football may not be as attractive as Potter’s, but he is what Everton need at the moment.

One of Dyche’s biggest problems in his final months as the Toffees manager was that he was too pragmatic with his approach.

While it is understandable that the Burnley manager wanted to avoid relegation by tightening things up at the back, it evidently restricted the Goodison Park outfit in attack.

The Merseyside-based club’s primary target this season is avoiding relegation and an expansive manager like Potter would not have perhaps worked out considering they are sitting just a point above the relegation zone.

Moyes, meanwhile, is not too different from Dyche stylistically, making the process of adapting to his playing style easier.

The veteran tactician may also make a few tweaks that could unlock Everton’s potential in attack.

On the other hand, there is no doubt that the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin needs to improve their performances in the second half of the season.
