Theo Walcott names Premier League manager Everton should have hired over Moyes
Theo Walcott believes Everton should have appointed Graham Potter instead of David Moyes at Goodison Park.
The Blues held discussions with the current West Ham United boss before Moyes signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to return to Merseyside as Sean Dyche’s replacement on Saturday (11 January).
Ex-Everton forward Walcott discussed the appointment on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (13 January, 7:40) and claimed Potter would have been a better appointment for The Friedkin Group.
He said: “I like David Moyes as a manager and everything he has done up to this point. But I feel Graham Potter might have been the shout before West Ham got in there, to be honest.
“The reason why I say that is they’re going to a new, beautiful stadium. They want to play with a bit more of a modern style, with a new generation of talent coming through, and I felt Graham Potter would have been a good match.”
Everton made the right choice with David Moyes
Unfortunately for Everton, there was no choice between Potter and Moyes as the former chose to join West Ham.
While the news of the snub came as a bitter blow to the Blues at the time, his rejection ultimately proved to be a blessing in disguise.
Somewhat coincidentally, Moyes is undoubtedly the most successful manager of both Everton and West Ham during the Premier League era, despite the fact that he was run out of East London by supporters.
The Toffees qualified for Europe semi-regularly under the 61-year-old and his methods have evolved since his last stint at Goodison Park 11 years ago.

He returns to Merseyside with a Europa Conference League trophy to his name, and his appointment is already having a positive impact among the Everton faithful.
Goodison Park will be bouncing when Moyes emerges from the tunnel for the first time against Aston Villa on Wednesday (15 January), whereas Potter suffered defeat in his first match in charge down south, in the 2-1 FA Cup loss against the same opponents.
Under Dyche, Evertonians dreaded what lay ahead in the Premier League campaign, but before a ball has even been kicked under Moyes, they are ready to back the team in a bid to retain their top-flight status.
In other Everton news, a fresh transfer twist emerges as another Serie A side makes an approach for a Toffees player.
