Mykolenko wows pundit after what he did in Everton v Aston Villa

Vitalii Mykolenko wowed Marc Albrighton with what he did for Everton against Aston Villa on Wednesday.

The scoreline read 0-0 after a largely uneventful first half at Goodison Park on 15 January, but Mykolenko, who is in talks over a new deal, impressed Albrighton with a ball he played to set up Dominic Calvert-Lewin for a shot in the 27th minute.

Albrighton described the pass as “fantastic”, while also acknowledging Calvert-Lewin’s effort, although he did not manage to find the back of the net.

“It was a fantastic ball from Vitalii Mykolenko into the channel for Dominic Calvert-Lewin”, Albrighton said on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, as quoted by BBC Sport’s live blog (7:58 pm).

“The forward does more or less everything right but the finish, dragging it wide of the far post.”

With the scoreline reading 0-0 at half-time, David Moyes’ hopes of getting his second spell at Goodison Park off to a winning start remain alive.

It will not be easy, though, as Aston Villa look to move towards the top four.

While Calvert-Lewin failed to test Emi Martinez with the aforementioned shot, the Toffees had two shots on target in the first 45 minutes of the game.

It remains to be seen if the Merseyside-based club can convert one or two chances they create in the second half and claim all three points.

Meanwhile, there is a need to tighten things at the back as Jarrad Branthwaite and Ashley Young were guilty of lapses in concentration.

James Tarkowski came to Brainthwaite’s rescue when his mistake gifted Villa a chance early on in the game, while Ollie Watkins failed to make the most of a blunder from Young.
