Emery interview cut short by BBC after Aston Villa win v Everton, reason shared
Unai Emery’s interview after Aston Villa beat Everton on Wednesday was cut short due to the Spaniard having a sore throat, Steve Hermon has said.
The BBC Radio WM reporter posted on X (16 January) after posting his brief interview with Emery as part of a news bulletin, in which he allowed the Villa boss to “rest his voice” following their 1-0 victory.
Villa’s win at Goodison Park left both Emery and returning Toffees boss David Moyes with plenty to shout about, with former Evertonian Amadou Onana at the centre of a controversial incident in the second half.
Hermon said: “Unai Emery struggled through his post-match media duties last night because of a sore throat, as you can hear in Katharine Merry’s BBC Radio WM Sport bulletin.
“I show. I felt bad for the Aston Villa boss, so didn’t ask any further questions after the win at Everton.”
Everton v Aston Villa leaves Moyes and Emery both reeling
While Emery came away from Goodison barely able to speak but with three points in the bag, Moyes will have had plenty to say to both his on-field and off-field staff at full-time of the Toffees’ narrow defeat.
Undone by Ollie Watkins six minutes after half-time, the Blues’ sheer inability to find the net in response leaves Moyes and his side with a mountain to climb if they’re to escape relegation trouble this season.
The Toffees’ abysmal run of form – which has already put paid to Sean Dyche’s time in charge – leaves them 16th in the Premier League table and just a point above the drop zone, with reinforcements needed.

It’s almost a surprise that Moyes hadn’t lost his voice by full-time on Wednesday (15 January), having seen his side – particularly Dominic Calvert-Lewin – blow the few chances they had to find an equaliser.
With a hollowed-out squad in need of direction and The Friedkin Group having plenty of work to do before 3 February, don’t be surprised to see Moyes’ voice croaking before the Toffees’ next game.
In other Everton news, the Toffees have been offered the chance to sign a two-time Premier League winner on a free transfer.
