Emmanuel Petit drops Everton relegation verdict in David Moyes admission

Emmanuel Petit has questioned whether David Moyes has made the right decision returning to Everton.

The Friedkin Group parted ways with Sean Dyche ahead of the Toffees’ FA Cup game against Peterborough.

However, the new owners wasted no time in bringing Moyes back to Goodison Park after 12 years away from the club in the hope that he can turn their season around.

Speaking on talkSPORT (16 January, 11:07am), Petit admitted that the Scotsman has a big task on his hands to save the club from relegation given their struggles to sco goals.

Petit said: “It’s like when you divorce somebody and then you go back to the same person 10 years after that. I don’t like this idea, I don’t like this feeling especially this environment you know surrounding Everton.

“I think there are so many troubles on the pitch but as well you know they’re thinking about building a new stadium, they’re fighting against relegation so I think they don’t win games, they don’t score goals and we all know that if you want to save your skin in the Premier League you have to win games and you have to score goals.

“So the confidence is not there and I think Everton has been flirting with the relegation zone for years now so sooner or later, something’s got to change because it will happen.”

David Moyes has plenty of work to do at Everton

Petit isn’t wrong when he points out that Moyes coming into the club is not enough to turn everything around as Everton still find themselves in a dire position.

The Toffees sit one point clear of the relegation zone as it stands and if they don’t start improving their results, they could soon find themselves getting pulled into the drop zone.

However, there probably needed to be a fresh start at Goodison Park and while Dyche did the best he could under difficult circumstances, there was a feeling that the two parties needed to move on.

Moyes on the other hand brings the optimism of working under the new owners while also reminding supporters of better days during his first spell with the club which could lift the morale around Merseyside.

With the transfer window underway, the 61-year-old has no time to waste and must get to work to strengthen his side because if he does fail to do so, it could ruin his legacy at Everton.
