Jordan Pickford dubbed ‘outstanding’ as Moyes problem at Everton mooted
Jordan Pickford has been hailed as “outstanding” by Phil McNulty after what he’s done at Everton with the BBC chief also hinting at a “problem” David Moyes is set to face at Goodison Park.
The Scotsman lost his first game in charge of the Toffees as the Merseyside outfit fell to a 1-0 defeat against Unai Emery Aston Villa side.
At the moment, they’re still one point above the bottom-three spots but unless their form turns around soon, it feels like fans could be in for a bumpy ride this term.
Writing for the BBC Sport website (15 January), McNulty shared his thoughts on both the squad that Moyes has to play with.
“He [Moyes] will not have too many concerns about Everton at the back, with an outstanding goalkeeper in Jordan Pickford and two solid central defenders in James Tarkowski and Jarrad Branthwaite,” he wrote.
“The very obvious problem is further forward, where he must somehow get main striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin firing again.”
David Moyes needs to turn things around at Everton
Although there’s an affinity between Everton’s fans and Moyes due to his prior spell with the Merseyside outfit – albeit some still disagreed with how he left the club in the first place – it still remains unclear whether the Scotsman was the right man for the job.
The likes of Graham Potter were linked with the Toffees’ hot seat and after he managed to earn his first three points for the Hammers in their 3-2 victory over Fulham on 14 January, it’s no doubt raised a few questions in the minds of fans.
Sean Dyche is a Premier League survival specialist and although his playstyle wasn’t pretty or even entertaining, his team were very hard to beat.

Of course, Moyes still has all the players that Dyche had at his disposal to try and figure something out but unless it’s sorted soon, it feels like it could be too steep of a hill for the Merseyside outfit to climb.
Only time will tell what the future holds but if a new number nine isn’t brought in during the winter transfer window, Everton could well be digging their own grave.
