Leon Osman has hailed Kevin Thelwell for the work he’s done behind the scenes to ensure that Everton abided by the Premier League’s PSR rules for the 2023/24 period.

None of the 20 top-flight teams will be facing sanctions this season [Martyn Ziegler] due to a breach in the Premier League’s PSR rules, which came as a surprise to many.

Speaking on the BBC’s Football News Show (14 January), Everton legend Osman shared his praises for the work director of football Thelwell has done in helping comply with PSR.

“It’s important across the Premier League [passing PSR] because everybody is trying their best to make sure they’re inside the regulations,” he said.

“Everyone has seen [what] Everton went through with that points deduction. Nobody wants to experience that so everybody else is doing their best and it was really pleasing to see Everton have got the right side of it at the moment.

“We’ve dug ourselves out of a very difficult situation, it’s been good work behind the scenes, Kevin Thelwell has been working very hard to make sure that incomings and outgoings have all met the regulations in that situation.”

Kevin Thelwell has done Everton a massive favour

Although some fans may have been left feeling a little underwhelmed by the moves that the Toffees made to bolster their ranks in the summer, it feels like fans should now be thanking Thewell for his stringent business.

The sale of players such as Lewis Dobbin and Amadou Onana will have no doubt had a major impact on the Merseyside outfit passing the Premier League’s PSR rules.

And, while fans may have been annoyed by their sales, specifically Onana, it seems that it was all necessary so that everything could be kept in line.

At the moment, Everton find themselves in a relegation battle and although David Moyes has returned to try and set things right, it’s unclear how successful his appointment is going to be at the moment.

It’s also evident that if the Merseyside outfit wants to fight for their place in the top flight, some additional reinforcement could be needed in January which is easier said than done.
