Moyes in disbelief after Calvert-Lewin moment in Everton v Aston Villa

David Moyes was left in disbelief after Dominic Calvert-Lewin missed a chance to earn Everton a point from their Premier League clash against Aston Villa on Wednesday, Connor O’Neill has said.

In the dying embers of the game, the striker was passed an inch-perfect ball from Jesper Lindstrom which he then somehow managed to hit over the bar despite being less than six yards away from the net.

Thanks to this miss, the exit-linked attacker is now goalless in his last 16 games and has been one of the main problems for the Toffees this term.

Writing for the Liverpool ECHO (16 January), O’Neill shared what the reaction of Moyes was like after the Englishman missed his chance.

“On the Everton bench, David Moyes could not believe what he had witnessed. Sean Dyche sat at home probably could,” he wrote.

“Moyes turned away in frustration, while Calvert-Lewin lay on the Goodison Park turf with his head in his hands. He knew that this was his big chance.”

Everton need a new striker before the winter transfer window closes

The main thorn in Everton’s side this season has been the lack of goals that they’ve scored across all competitions.

While they may have four different number nines at the club, the vast majority of them are made of glass and in the case of Beto, he’s just been poor since his arrival from Udinese.

Indeed, Iliman Ndiaye and Dwight McNeil have managed to pick up the slack on more than one occasion this term but with the latter of the two still out with injury, it feels like some changes need to be made at Goodison Park.

And, now that Armando Broja is out for an extended period, it feels like the best thing for Everton to do is to send the Albania international back to Chelsea, which in turn would then free up a domestic loan spot that the Toffees could fill.

If Moyes doesn’t bring in a new number nine before the end of the window, it’s hard to see how they’ll be able to get out of the relegation battle.
