Carragher raves over what ‘Outstanding’ Calvert-Lewin did in Everton v Tottenham

Jamie Carragher was left raving over Dominic Calvert-Lewin after his performance for Everton against Tottenham.

The striker broke the deadlock after 13 minutes to put his side 1-0 up and the Toffees went on to win the game 3-2.

Coming into the game, the 27-year-old had scored only two goals throughout the season so far but supporters will be hoping this was a sign of better things to come.

Speaking live on Sky Sports commentary (19 January), Carragher credited Calvert-Lewin’s all-round centre-forward play when nominating him as man of the match.

He said: “Calvert-Lewin, he’s had a lot of criticism as well this season but I thought the goal he scored was absolutely fantastic.

“Well look at that, just onto David’s season rank, the best in all those departments, a lot of that will have come from the fact they got that early goal, had that confidence shining through throughout the game.

“Still could have got a couple more goals but some of the centre-forward play second half bringing the ball down on his chest, I think he’s been outstanding, alongside Ndiaye as well but he’s just got the nod.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin shone for Everton

It has been a tough season for Calvert-Lewin who has struggled to find any hint of regular goalscoring form in a season where his side has desperately needed goals.

However, the striker took his goal very well keeping a calm head when beating the opposition defenders before taking a neat and powerful strike into the net.

After he scored, the remainder of the 90 minutes was full of confidence for Calvert-Lewin and, as Carragher says, he probably could have scored again in the game.

The key thing now is that the English striker continues to keep his performances to this new high standard he has proven he can deliver and help push his team away from any relegation battle this term.

However, the Blues looked a lot more self-assured under the management of David Moyes on Sunday and this change could prove to be a defining moment in the team’s season.
