Jeff Stelling wowed by Dominic Calvert-Lewin as Everton ‘discover new player’

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s display against Tottenham looked like Everton had “discovered” a brand new player, Jeff Stelling has said.

Speaking on talkSPORT (20 January, 6:22am), Stelling and Ally McCoist were taken aback by Calvert-Lewin’s performance in the Toffees’ 3-2 home win on 19 January, as he broke a goal drought to score the opener.

Calvert-Lewin hadn’t netted since mid-September in a dry run stretching back 18 Premier League games, but his well-taken strike and overall display was one of several praised by the two pundits.

“Oh my goodness, Iliman Ndiaye… and they’ve discovered a new kid up front – Dominic Calvert-Lewin – he looked pretty good didn’t he?”, Stelling said.

McCoist replied: “Where did he come from? He looked lively.”

It’s often said that when a striker is on a barren run in front of goal, they need that little slice of luck to get themselves back on track, be that via a ricochet, deflection or being gifted a chance.

However, Calvert-Lewin didn’t require any of those to finally break his 18-game scoring duck, twisting and turning away from his marker before firing home expertly from just inside the box.

It was a finish reminiscent of a striker full of confidence and in red-hot form, and despite the latter being far from the case, there’s no doubt that the Blues were high on confidence from front to back on Sunday.

David Moyes’ first match back in charge at Goodison ended in a narrow loss, with Calvert-Lewin spurning a golden opportunity late on, but the three-day interval since appears to have sparked him back into life.

Calvert-Lewin remains one of the Premier League’s most lethal strikers on his day, and while those days have been few and far between, Moyes’ return could prove to be the key to unlocking him once more.
