David Moyes drops Dwight McNeil injury update ahead of Everton v Brighton

David Moyes has revealed that Dwight McNeil may require surgery on his knee after a failed return to Everton training.

The Englishman last featured for the Toffees in early December and looked set to return to some sort of training before a clash against Brighton.

In a disappointing update, it now appears that the 25-year-old has suffered another setback and will return to seek advice from a specialist.

Moyes confirmed this in his press conference on Friday (24 January), shared via X, as he said: “He’ll probably have to have some surgery on his knee.

“Today he’s tried but it looks like we’ll have to get him back to a specialist. It’s a real blow because we need him back for things like deliveries and set-pieces but we need him back for his general play.”

It is certainly a blow to be without the winger for such an extended period, especially after how important he was under Sean Dyche.

The manager brought him in from Burnley and he managed to prove his importance the longer featured on the flank at Goodison.

This has seen him score three and assist three despite making just 13 starts this campaign, a positive return in a dull year so far for the Toffees.

It would have been a boost ahead of this weekend’s clash against Brighton to have McNeil back in training, even if he couldn’t feature in the squad.

This isn’t going to be the case and is unlikely to happen now for many weeks after what Moyes has said.

As a result, Jesper Lindstrom and Jack Harrison must step up and prove themselves to the Scottish head coach to replicate the output of the injured 25-year-old.
