Paul Merson explodes at what was said about Everton live on Sky Sports
Paul Merson has slammed Tim Sherwood for implying that the rearranged Merseyside Derby with Everton would be an easy ride for Liverpool.
Speaking on Sky Sports’ Soccer Saturday (25 January, 1:33pm), Merson and Sherwood debated Liverpool’s next few games and their implications on the title race but disagreed about 12 February.
Sherwood suggested that Liverpool’s game in hand against the Toffees would be a safe bet, but Merson argued it’ll be much more difficult for them at a floodlit Goodison Park.
“It all comes down to that game in hand – if they played that game in hand tomorrow and won it, they’re 10 points clear with goal difference, then it’s a bit different,” Merson said.
Sherwood replied: “Their game in hand is against Everton.”
“Oh, come on – Everton”, Merson hit back. “It’s Everton under the lights, David Moyes, come on…”
Everton ready to derail Liverpool title charge at Goodison Park
Not only is Merson spot on when anticipating that a Merseyside Derby under the lights will be tough for high-flying Liverpool, but it’s also the match this season that Blues fans want to win more than any other.
As the very last derby match to be held at Goodison Park before the Toffees head for pastures new at Bramley-Moore Dock on the city’s waterfront, the anticipation ahead of this game is absolutely palpable.

That’s only been heightened by the fixture’s postponement and subsequent rearrangement due to Storm Darragh, which saw weather conditions in Liverpool make the game unsafe to be played on 7 December.
Little over a couple of months later though, the rivalry will finally recommence, as Liverpool fans cross the Stanley Park divide for the final time, looking for a win to continue their bid for the crown.
A Sean Dyche masterclass last term resulted in a 2-0 win for the Blues to secure safety and end the Reds’ title ambitions, and while much earlier in the season this time around, David Moyes could pull off a masterclass of his own with the exact same results in mind.
