Calvert-Lewin injury: ‘Worst possible outcome’ verdict after Everton blow

Ian Croll believes Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s latest injury setback is the “worst possible outcome” for Everton.

The 27-year-old had not long returned amongst the goals after opening the scoring in the 3-2 win against Tottenham (19 January), but the forward has sustained a hamstring injury and will be out of action until the end of February [Bryan King].

Although the injuries are beginning to pile up at Goodison Park, Liverpool Echo reporter Croll believes losing Calvert-Lewin when the Blues are starting to show consistent form in the Premier League is the most significant loss of all.

He wrote on X [27 January]: “Very much a case of one step forward two steps back with injuries. The return of Garner dampened by Mangala’s injury. Calvert-Lewin out the worst possible outcome. Beto as the only fit striker cause for concern. I still think we have options up top but we’re looking threadbare.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin a massive miss for Everton

Although the Englishman has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park all season, David Moyes hardly has many options to call upon to lead the line.

Even Beto, the last remaining senior centre-forward for the Blues, has reaffirmed his desire to leave in the current transfer window while he pushes for a return to Serie A [Tuttosport].

Therefore, the Toffees cannot afford to rest on their laurels despite the recent upturn in form – with only a seven-point gap to 18th-place Wolves, their top-flight status is far from safe.

Everton officials have been spotted running the rule over Rangers forward Hamza Igamane once again in Scotland [Tuttosport] after scouts were left “very impressed” after the Moroccan scored against Tottenham in the Europa League (12 December).

Nevertheless, Calvert-Lewin has shown glimpses of his previous form under Moyes, and while his woes will continue on Merseyside, it is no use crying over spilt milk.

The Blues boss will know exactly what needs to be done in the final seven days of the winter transfer window. With a relegation six-pointer against Leicester City (1 February) ahead, every point between now and May is crucial for survival.
