Jeff Stelling ‘staggered’ at Everton transfer update he’s told live on talkSPORT

Evan Ferguson joining Everton over West Ham United would be staggering, according to Jeff Stelling.

Ferguson is being linked with a loan move away from Brighton and, speaking live on talkSPORT, Shebahn Aherne said that he is expected to join the Toffees.

The news left Stelling in shock, as the television presenter was confused about why the Ireland international would opt to move to Goodison Park rather than join his former boss Graham Potter in East London.

“I’m shocked that you said Evan Ferguson is expected to go to Everton. I’d be staggered – staggered – by that”, Stelling said on talkSPORT (28 January, 6:27 am).

“If he has the option of going to West Ham, with his old boss Graham Potter, who got the best out of him, or a club who with the best will in the world have seen centre-forwards struggle since the days of Duncan Ferguson, I’d be really surprised. But who knows?”

Evan Ferguson to opt Everton over West Ham?

Stelling is right. It is hard to see Ferguson join Everton instead of West Ham, where he could reunite with Potter. After all, he made his senior debut for Brighton under the now Irons head coach.

Potter’s presence at the London Stadium is likely to give the Hammers an advantage in the race to sign Ferguson on loan before the winter transfer window closes on 3 February.

It is also worth noting that the East London outfit are two places above the Goodison Park outfit in the Premier League, although only three points separate them and David Moyes’ side have a game in hand.

Therefore, Everton may be better off turning their attention towards alternative targets, especially as we are in the final week of the window.

With Dominic Calvert-Lewin picking up an injury in the 1-0 win against Brighton on Saturday (25 January) and Chelsea loanee Armando Broja already out, Moyes will likely want to add a new striker to his ranks for the second half of the season.

Ferguson would certainly be an exciting choice as he would bring Premier League experience as well.
