Carlos Alcaraz transfer: Everton move causes ‘scratched heads’

Everton have left fans in Flamengo with “scratched heads” after their acquisition of Carlos Alcaraz in the winter transfer window, South American expert Tim Vickery has said.

Although the deal seemed to be done a day or two before the 3 February deadline, the attacker wasn’t announced by the Toffees until the last minute with the Merseyside outfit even having to put in a deal sheet to secure the move.

However, the reason Flamengo’s fans have been left baffled is because last Thursday, Alcaraz had one of his best games for the team and the the day after, his exit was agreed upon.

With this in mind, South American expert Tim Vickery has shared his thoughts on the situation and admitted it was seen as a”strange” move by those in Brazil.

“Southampton fans will be disappointed that he hasn’t come back to them, he did very well there, he’s an attacking midfielder who is good at ghosting into the box and has got a goal in him,” he said live on talkSPORT (5 February, 15:24pm).

“This is quite a strange one really as Flamengo signed him, he was at Southampton and then was on loan at Juventus and when he came last year, he was the biggest signing in Flamengo’s history and they’ve signed some big ones.

“He hasn’t quite fit in and on Thursday, he played and scored and it’s probably the best game that he’s had and then the news came in the next day that Flamengo wanted to get rid of him.

“There’s a few scratched heads going on but I think Flamengo’s loss is Everton’s gain, the fans should enjoy him, he’s fiercely competitive and there’s a strong personality there as well and he’s got that gift of grabbing goals from midfield.”

Carlos Alcaraz could be the Everton saviour this season

Things have started to look up for Everton over the last couple of weeks but there’s likely still the thought of relegation in the back of some fans’ heads.

Bringing David Moyes back to the club was arguably one of the best things that the Friedkin Group could have done with their form being drastically turned around with the Scotsman in charge.

In Alcaraz’s last Premier League stint with Southampton, the Argentine was one of the Saints’ best players due to his sheer amount of pace alongside his keen eye for goal.

While he’ll still have a long way to go to pip Iliman Ndiaye of Everton’s star-man status, it feels like the duo are likely to work well with one another and perhaps add some more goals from the Toffees’ midfield.

Only time will tell if only bringing in one player in the winter transfer window was enough but for the moment, fans can be excited about seeing their new player on the pitch.
