Richard Keys will delight Everton fans with edited Liverpool footage he’s shared
James Tarkowski’s last-gasp volley in the Merseyside derby couldn’t have been much better for Everton fans.
The centre-back’s first-time effort against Liverpool – coming beyond added time right in front of a packed Gwladys Street End – secured a 2-2 draw for the Toffees in the last ever derby at Goodison Park.
David Moyes’ captain producing an equaliser at the death was a fitting way to send off the Grand Old Lady, and the post-match brawl which followed will see the match itself go down in Everton folklore.
Other than Tarkowski’s strike being a winning goal, few Evertonians could even try to picture a better scenario than the one which unfolded on Wednesday, but one surprise name may have done just that.
Richard Keys reads the room with Everton edit on social media
Richard Keys of all people took to social media to marry Tarkowski’s thunderous strike with an iconic line of commentary, posting a video of the edited footage on his X account (13 February).
beIN SPORTS presenter Keys wrote: “This – of course – is the goal the original words were meant for”, as he overlaid Peter Drury’s commentary of the goal (for USATV) with an iconic line from former Toffees striker Andy Gray.
The line in question is a famous one from a Champions League match involving none other than Liverpool and Steven Gerrard, in which Gray said: “Oh! You beauty! What a hit son – what a hit!”
Everton fans will love improved James Tarkowski commentary
Seemingly every media team available from up and down the land (and the globe) packed into Goodison for the final ever derby at Everton’s famous old ground, yet none were able to produce such iconic commentary.
Tarkowski’s volley was certainly worthy of a famous line with a finish which matched the grandness of the occasion on Merseyside, and Keys’ social media post will certainly please Toffees fans as a result.
The fact that Gray’s iconic “what a hit” came as a result of a goal from the favourite son of their arch-rivals – Steven Gerrard – will only raise the delight of Everton fans in the fallout of Wednesday’s Merseyside derby.
As is the case with Gerrard across Stanley Park, Tarkowski‘s name will forever be etched into the fabric of this fixture, becoming the last Everton player to score against Liverpool at the Gwladys Street End.
As a former Evertonian himself, it wouldn’t be surprising to learn that Gray wishes his career-defining line came watching his beloved Toffees too.
