Dominic Calvert-Lewin would do better away from Everton as ‘frustration’ detailed

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is “feeding on scraps” at Everton in what could be his final season in blue, according to Ian Darke.

The striker has three goals to his name this season having played most of the term up front under Sean Dyche, struggling for chances to put away before suffering injury under David Moyes.

Since Moyes’ arrival, the team have looked far more free-scoring and contributed to a memorable final Merseyside derby with Liverpool at Goodison Park on Wednesday night (12 February).

Calvert-Lewin missing out on improved Everton

Darke believes Calvert-Lewin could return and hit the ground running, but it would all depend on his fitness.

The number nine has been ruled out during the time in which Moyes has released the attacking shackles, with Beto having got himself in the goals as he leads the line.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the TV commentator admitted it is frustrating – for both the fans and the player himself.

“He could potentially come back and rediscover that goalscoring form, but only if he stays fit and that’s a huge ‘if’ with him,” Darke said.

“They wanted to get him back fighting fit and to be fair he has had a run of games this season, but it’s a frustrating one with Calvert-Lewin. He’s had to feed on scraps with Everton so he probably hasn’t fulfilled his goalscoring potential.

“He might do better in a team creating more chances for him, but they’re scoring more under Moyes.”

Merseyside derby v Liverpool one for the ages

Everton and Liverpool waved farewell to Merseyside derbies at Goodison Park in midweek and in true fashion, providing a memorable Premier League spectacle.

The goals, the drama and the derby day brawls – the two Scouse rivals had it all, and the Gwladys Street will remember James Tarkowski’s 98th-minute crashing volley in the same way as some of the most iconic strikes to grace the turf down the years.

Calvert-Lewin will have been hugely disappointed not to be able to play in the final Goodison derby, having donned the blue shirt in many clashes with their neighbours down the years.

Beto added to his burgeoning goals tally with the opener to raise the roof, but the sour note saw Iliman Ndiaye forced off injured and distraught in the first half.

With Everton unable to secure more reinforcements in the striker department in January, Calvert-Lewin is needed more than ever by his manager to sustain the improved scoring run throughout the team.
