David Weir stance emerges as Everton seek Kevin Thelwell replacement

Everton are reportedly interested in bringing David Weir in from Brighton to replace Kevin Thelwell as technical director.

The current director of football at Goodison Park has done some astute work in testing circumstances but is out of contract in the summer and all signs are pointing towards him being replaced by TFG.

The 51-year-old has had to deal with various financial constraints which have made his job difficult but despite his various successes with the likes of Iliman Ndiaye, James Garner and Dwight McNeil, it doesn’t appear that a new contract is on the table.

As a result, ex-Everton captain Weir is being considered as a new option and now the L4 club have learned the stance of their former defender.

David Weir to snub Everton as Kevin Thelwell replacement

The former Scotland international landed a role as technical director at Brighton back in 2023 as a replacement for Dan Ashworth.

Senior staff at the Amex have been known to be poached by other clubs which can’t come as a surprise given their data-driven successes in recent years.

Despite this, it appears that Tony Bloom is set to keep hold of a key member of his hierarchy on the South Coast with Weir set to snub a return to Goodison.

The Daily Mirror reported on 21 February that the ex-Evertonian has been identified as an alternative for Thelwell who is expected to depart in the summer.

This is set to be part of a “major overhaul” at the top level by The Friedkin Group during their first summer in charge in L4.

The Friedkin Group face David Weir blow at Everton

Since coming in to takeover from Farhad Moshiri, plenty has gone right for the American businessmen.

The appointment of Moyes has proved to be inspired and as a result, it appears now that Premier League football is seemingly a guarantee for next campaign.

This will be a huge boost to the Toffees ahead of their move into the Bramley Moore Dock stadium with test events ongoing.

With these plus points against the Friedkins’ name, it will come as a frustrating blow to potentially miss out on bringing Weir in from Brighton.

It feels likely that the Roma bosses will return with an offer to try and test the Scot’s resolve but ultimately could fail in their mission.

This could potentially hand Thelwell the chance to keep his job if an alternative isn’t found in good time by the Toffees owners.
