Everton v Manchester United: Chris Sutton savages Ashley Young

Chris Sutton has reacted to the incident involving Ashley Young as Everton and Manchester United played out a 2-2 draw on Saturday.

United scored two late goals but there could’ve been a dramatic late twist with Andy Madley pointing to the spot for a Toffees penalty.

However, VAR sent him to the monitor to check his decision and showed him an angle that compelled him to reverse his decision.

VAR made the right decision – Chris Sutton

While the majority of the pundits believe that the VAR got it wrong, Chris Sutton believed that Madley was right to overturn his decision.

He even slammed Young for diving and wrote on X: “A Simulation Game contender today from Ashley Young?”

On Match of the Day, he further added: “I thought Ashley Young made such a meal of it. I don’t think there was sufficient contact to go down in that manner and the referee went over to the monitor and made the decision. That’s the correct use of VAR.”

That was the last major incident of the game and there was no more goal-mouth action, with both sides sharing the spoils.

Everton robbed of the three points against Manchester United

No matter what Sutton says, the Toffees were robbed of the three points against Manchester United at Goodison Park.

Not only did they play better and deserved to pick up the three points, but they earned a clear penalty and were not given it.

Madley was shown the wrong angle of Harry Maguire’s push and there was enough contact there to send Young to the floor.

Most pundits, including Michael Owen, a Liverpool legend and ex Manchester United striker, agreed that a penalty should have been given.

This was one of the harshest calls to have gone against Everton in recent memory and the fans and David Moyes will undoubtedly be upset with it.

The coming days will be interesting as there might be audio released of the conversation and the Toffees must push for it.

It was a disgrace of a decision and the officials must be held to account for such things.

Not that things will change, but the club will feel that they’ve done their bit to try and make a difference.
