TFG want to hire new Everton ‘overlord’ after exit twist at Goodison

Everton have witnessed several changes in recent months including the major takeover news of The Friedkin Group, who are now implementing their ownership style on the Toffees.

The Friedkins are making vast changes, which look to include the summer appointment of Angus Kinnear as CEO from Leeds United and has already seen David Moyes replace Sean Dyche as manager.

Kevin Thelwell, who has overseen recruitment and other football development duties in his directorial role at Goodison Park for the past three years, is due to depart Everton at the end of the season.

Everton ‘overlord’ latest from Friedkins

The Friedkin Group are looking to appoint a high-profile football figure to oversee the running of both Everton and Roma, according to Alan Nixon.

Nixon shared via his Patreon (2 March) that a “football supremo” is wanted by TFG to run both of their major European clubs on a daily basis.

Moyes, who was appointed in January and has since rekindled an excellent surge in form on the pitch, will be unsure where this leaves him in the long-term, believed to continue to want a significant role in recruitment at Everton.

This appears to be behind the arrangement for Thelwell to leave the Toffees this summer, with TFG having already sacked two managers at Roma this season and Claudio Ranieri coming out of retirement to take the reins with the Giallorossi.

Roma are currently sat ninth in the Serie A table and are in danger of failing to qualify for any European competition this season, which could pave the way for TFG to make wholesale changes to the football setup.

Friedkins taking advantage of multi-club system

Multi-club ownership is an increasingly established system throughout global football – obvious examples including Red Bull’s growing empire and the City Football Group.

Most high-profile clubs have at the very least some sort of sisterhood arrangement whereby academies will interchange players, and key figures will work across several organisations.

Clubs can often find this as a PSR loophole, with transfer dealings taking place between them as well as regular loans to further development, as has already been rumoured between Everton and Roma since Dan Friedkin became Toffees owner.

TFG own both Everton and Roma

It is clear TFG want to significantly grow the profile of their sporting empire and the concept of an “overlord” to run Everton and Roma in tandem is certainly an interesting one.

It will however raise scepticism in some sections of the support, particularly regarding Moyes given his impact since returning to Merseyside.
