Beto claim made as Everton tipped to sign Norwich star Josh Sargent

Everton have struggled to find a solution at centre-forward for several years, with a number of attackers trying and failing to find consistency in the role.

The Toffees have not had a reliable goalscorer upfront since the departure of Richarlison in 2022, with the Brazilian netting 10 goals in 30 Premier League games for a struggling side.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Neal Maupay, Ellis Simms and Moise Kean are some of the strikers who have struggled at centre-forward at Goodison Park in recent years, but David Moyes may have found his solution.

Beto has found his best form under Moyes, with the target man performing superbly in recent months, and this could affect Everton’s transfer plans.

Beto form could put Everton off Josh Sargent transfer

Everton are among the clubs linked with a move for Norwich City striker Josh Sargent, who has been flying in the Championship.

However, pundit Lee Hendrie has now claimed that Everton could be better off sticking with Beto upfront, rather than pushing for a move for Sargent.

“I know that Everton are linked with him too, but they’ve got Beto who’s transformed and turned a corner,” Hendrie told Football League World (1 April) when asked if he rates Everton’s chances of signing prolific Championship striker Sargent.

“I just think that at Leeds, he might just offer something a little bit different to what they’ve actually got.”

Everton should avoid Sargent transfer

The transformation of Beto under Moyes has now meant that Sargent would be an unnecessary transfer for Everton.

If a striker is to be signed, it should be one which raises the level of the squad. Although Sargent has been prolific in the Championship, questions remain over whether he can translate this form to the Premier League.

Sargent managed just two goals in 26 Premier League games, albeit when he was much younger and less experienced than he is now, but the 25-year-old is not an upgrade on Beto as things stand.

Beto has scored six goals in eight Premier League starts, and brings a lot of physicality and height to the target-man role which has proven useful.
