Chris Sutton calls out Everton live on air – ‘I’ve seen enough’

Everton climbed to 14th in the Premier League with their 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground on Saturday.

Toffees supporters will have been relatively content as David Moyes’ men appeared for a draw with one of this season’s best top-flight teams.

However, the Blues faithful were left ecstatic as Abdoulaye Doucoure bagged a 94th-minute winner in the East Midlands.

Moyes’ side have now claimed a respectable return of four points from games against Forest, Liverpool and the 1-1 draw with Arsenal.

Everton called out despite win

After the Toffees won in the East Midlands, an Everton fan called into BBC Radio 5 Live’s 606 phone-in show and criticised Forest’s direct playing style.

Chris Sutton hit back immediately live on air [12 April, 19.45], saying: “Route One Everton. I’ve seen enough of Everton this season. All you do is lump it.”

Meanwhile, the Toffees are now 18 points clear of the relegation zone and have all but guaranteed their Premier League status.

Sutton’s criticism of Everton is unfair

Even the most passionate Everton supporter may admit that their style of play can be far from pretty.

However, Sutton is wrong to point the finger at the Toffees for their direct football.

Everton are on solid form

At the beginning of the season, under the tenure of former boss Sean Dyche, the Merseyside outfit’s primary objective was to obtain Premier League survival ahead of next season’s move from Goodison Park to the new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock.

Dyche was sacked amid a string of poor results, with Everton’s Premier League status seemingly in doubt, but Moyes has arrived and turned their season around.

Moyes deserves a great deal of respect for what he has done since returning to the Goodison Park dugout, as he guided the Blues to a nine-game unbeaten run in the top flight before they were beaten by Liverpool in the Merseyside Derby on 2 April.

The Toffees have admirably bounced back from that setback with a draw against high-fliers Arsenal and a win against top-four hopefuls Nottingham Forest.

Therefore, the Blues’ playing style is not as noteworthy as their impressive results of late.
